Women of Manhattan

By: Francie Cohen

The initiative “Women in Manhattan” attempts to shine a light on the experiences, input, and issues that women living and working in Manhattan, New York face. The project will look at many elements of women’s life, such as their job, social lives, as well as their cultural and political activities. I intend to acquire a thorough and nuanced picture of what it means to be a woman in Manhattan through interviews, photography, and video. I seek to raise awareness and respect for the unique difficulties and possibilities that women in Manhattan confront by presenting the stories of women from varied origins and views. In the end, my project hopes to contribute to a more equal and inclusive society for women in Manhattan.

W.O.W. Project

The W.O.W. Project is a community space and grassroots group established in New York City’s Chinatown. Mei Lum, the fifth-generation proprietor of Wing On Wo & Co., a porcelain ware business in Chinatown since 1890, began the initiative in 2016.

The W.O.W. Project strives to conserve and commemorate Chinatown’s cultural legacy while also offering a location for people of the community to connect, share experiences, and engage in art and cultural events. The initiative provides a range of courses, events, and exhibitions that investigate the history, art, and culture of Chinatown and its population.

The W.O.W. Project, a communal place that acts as a platform for artists and entertainers to present their work, is one of The W.O.W. Project’s most significant efforts. Poetry readings, open mics, and theater plays are among the frequent activities and performances at the cafe.
The W.O.W. Project, in addition to cultural events, provides tools and support to small businesses and community members in Chinatown. The initiative provides financial literacy and marketing techniques training, as well as a community directory to link citizens with local companies and services.
